Self-Esteem

Hey everyone!

Hope you are preparing for the holidays, hope you are staying safe, and taking care of one another. For this blog, and this upcoming podcast episode, let’s talk self-esteem. Self-esteem is many times discussed along with confidence, which involves a sense of self or placing value on one's self. One can have confidence in one area while having less confidence in another area. Self-esteem, however, is not so much situational and involves self worth. The idea, or level of self-esteem does affect behavior when interacting with others and adapting to situations, no matter the level of confidence present at any given time. With this bit of information, some people may conclude that confidence and insecurity could exist within someone at the same time.

What insecurity means to you and how you define it could change your opinion on such a statement. insecurity is, for most part, relative from whom it stems from.

Confidence is something that can be developed over time, many cases through education, training, experience, and building skills and knowledge. Self-esteem comes and develops from within. Your opinion, perspective, idea of yourself and what value you believe you are worth is on you. Gaining some confidence can help, and does not and will not replace or take the place of self-esteem, even though many people believe it does or can. There are people who have a false sense of confidence because of their insecurity, and who feel that is their self-worth. Others have developed a good level of self confidence but do not consider their self-esteem because of the confidence they have.

Once you are able to differentiate confidence and self-esteem you recognize the simplicity of building confidence and the likelihood that you already have some level of it. Self-esteem on the other hand, can be more challenging, depending on person, and is damaged by anxiety, self-doubt, even lack of confidence. Confidence is not as often affected by lack of self-esteem. Remember, though, both are very important in self-development, self-improvement, and progression.
